How would you describe an underdog? Could it be described as a team that doesn’t have highly celebrated players? Is a underdog a team that usually doesn’t win or is a underdog just a team that has been successful but you might just not know about them. The Hialeah Giants are just that, an underdog. Before the USSSA World Series started no one knew of this team. With battles looming versus the #1 ranked Miami Prospects and the #3 ranked GA Raiders the little known team from Hialeah showed everyone that they were merely underdogs by name only. With victories over the Miami Prospects and the GA Raiders the Hialeah Giants stepped onto the diamond with a championship in sight. With a faithful crowd of supporters that had to honestly be the loudest traveling crowd I have ever seen at any baseball tournament, the Giants had the will to succeed. With the coaches barking instructions from the dugout the Giants were focused. The championship game they played in was hard fought as the GA Yard Dogs did not go away quietly even though the Giants had took control early in the game but in my opinion I think that’s the way they wanted it. A blue collar team that played small ball and great defense and with the final out which was a routine grounder to first the Hialeah Giants claimed their first World Series title. Not bad for an underdog from Hialeah Florida.
