Primetime Youth Football Tournament Review

Deion Sanders and Jamal Lewis brings two communities together

What was only a thought had finally come to reality when Deion Sanders and Jamal Lewis organized the first annual Primetime Youth Football Tournament. Jamal Lewis is an Atlanta native who went on to a great college and pro career. Winning championships at the college level and as a pro, he achieved amazing accomplishments on the field, including being named the AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year after rushing for 2,066 yards. There can be no other words that would describe Deion Sanders better than “Athlete”. One of the most exciting athletes of our time, Deion is the only man to score a touchdown in 6 different ways. Also, let's not forget about the effectiveness he had with the Atlanta Braves when they were pushing through the ranks to become a World Series mainstay in the 90’s.

These two established and accomplished men put together a great community event that was able to bring two states together, two teams together and more importantly two communities together for a common goal, competition and unity.

To say that the Atlanta community simply showed its support was an understatement,

as the stadium was packed. The band marched in ahead of the teams as they prepared to kickoff the tournament. The announcer was great as he was able to add his own unique spin to the play-by-play commentary. Looking along the sideline, one could see former NFL Players and various celebrities. Even the Mayor of Atlanta, Kasim Reed, could be seen giving a welcome to the crowd.

At the end of the day, Deion’s T.R.U.T.H. team had won two games to one beating Jamal’s Atlanta Vikings in the 10 and 14-year-old age group. Jamal’s Atlanta Vikings came away with a win in the 12 year old game. As much as the focus was on competition, it was also a day to celebrate unity between people, as the event was a true success. The most important moment of the day was after the games were over when two players who had previously gotten into a scuffle on the field due to their competitive nature were brought together by Deion and Jamal and shook hands. It was important to them that the players understood that even though they fight tooth and nail on the field, once the game is over, you respectfully shake your opponent's hand and let it be.

For two players that had a dynamic effect on the field of play, they had an even larger impact off the field. With little help from outside sources, Jamal Lewis's Atlanta Vikings and Deion Sanders's T.R.U.T.H. were able to set a precedent that I believe will be duplicated by various pro athletes all over the nation.
